Takiguchi Kazen – Kongo Doji Figure

Takiguchi Kazen (1872–1940) was a ceramic artist from what is now Kaga City in Ishikawa Prefecture. He studied under the renowned Kyoto ware master Eiraku Wazen in the 19th century. In recognition of his talent, he was given the name "Kazen," combining one character from his hometown (Kaga) and one from his teacher (Wazen).
Our museum houses a Kochi ware-style figure of Kongō Dōji crafted by Takiguchi. The piece is notable for its dynamic design, with a somewhat cartoon-like expression. It is believed to be modeled after the Standing Figure of Kongō Dōji, an Important Cultural Property located at Yakushiji Temple in Yamanaka Onsen.
